Care guides
The best repair is the one you never need. Expert care guides for the fabrics in your wardrobe.
Washing
Hand wash in cool water (under 30ยฐC) with a wool-specific detergent. Machine wash only on a dedicated wool cycle. Avoid agitation.
Drying
Never tumble dry. Lay flat on a clean towel to reshape while damp. Hanging causes stretching.
Storage
Fold, never hang. Store in breathable cotton bags with cedar blocks to deter moths. Avoid plastic bags.
Pilling
Use a fabric shaver or lint roller. Pilling is normal friction wear โ removing it refreshes the look without damage.
Common repairs
Moth holes, thinning elbows, snags. All repairable by an experienced knitwear specialist.
Washing
Hand wash in cold water with a pH-neutral detergent. Never use hot water or biological detergents โ they degrade silk fibres.
Drying
Press gently in a towel to remove moisture. Dry flat away from direct sunlight, which causes fading and weakening.
Ironing
Iron inside-out on the lowest setting while slightly damp. Avoid steam directly on silk โ use a pressing cloth.
Stains
Blot immediately, never rub. Take to a specialist cleaner for persistent stains. Most are salvageable if treated quickly.
Common repairs
Snags, seam splits, and lining repairs are all achievable. Tears in lightweight silk require specialist invisible mending.
Washing
Wash inside-out in cold water to preserve colour. Wash less frequently โ every 5โ10 wears is enough for most denim.
Drying
Air dry whenever possible. Tumble drying on low is fine occasionally, but accelerates wear at stress points.
Fading
Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Use a colour-protect detergent. Fading is natural but can be slowed significantly.
Wear points
Inner thighs and back pockets are highest wear areas. Reinforce with sashiko or darning before holes form.
Common repairs
Crotch blowouts, hem reworks, zip replacement, and decorative visible mending are all popular denim repairs.
Cleaning
Wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Use a specialist leather cleaner for deeper cleaning. Never soak or machine wash.
Conditioning
Apply leather conditioner every 6โ12 months to prevent cracking and drying. Natural oils work well for unfinished leather.
Water damage
If soaked, stuff with newspaper and dry slowly away from heat. Never use a hairdryer โ it causes cracking.
Scratches
Minor scratches often buff out with a soft cloth and conditioner. Deeper scratches need professional colour matching.
Common repairs
Strap replacement, zip repair, stitching, lining tears, and panel replacement are all well within specialist capability.
Washing
Hand wash in lukewarm water. Many knitwears can machine wash on a wool/delicates cycle โ always check the label first.
Drying
Reshape while damp and dry flat. Knits are extremely prone to stretching if dried on a hanger.
Snagging
Use a crochet hook or blunt needle to push snags back through to the inside. Never cut a snag.
Bobbling
A fabric shaver removes bobbles effectively. High-friction areas (underarms, bag straps) are most prone.
Common repairs
Unravelling edges, elbow patches, hole darning, and full reknitting of small sections are all achievable by specialists.
Washing
Hand wash only in cold water with a cashmere-specific wash. Avoid any rubbing or wringing โ gentle pressure only.
Drying
Lay flat to dry on a clean towel away from heat and sunlight. Never hang โ cashmere stretches permanently.
Storage
Fold and store in a breathable bag with lavender or cedar. Rest cashmere between wears to allow fibres to recover.
Pilling
Use a cashmere comb (softer than a fabric shaver) to gently remove pills. Some pilling is normal in early wears.
Common repairs
Even small holes in cashmere are worth repairing โ the fabric is expensive to replace. Invisible mending is highly effective on cashmere.
Universal advice
Care labels are there for a reason. Before you try anything, check the washing and drying symbols. Ignoring them is the most common cause of shrinking and damage.
The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove. Blot (never rub) immediately with cold water. Most stains can be fully removed if treated within the first few minutes.
Over-washing is one of the biggest causes of premature garment wear. Air clothes after wearing. Most items can go far longer between washes than you think.
A loose button costs ยฃ8 to fix. If it falls off and damages the fabric, the cost goes up. Small repairs done early prevent bigger problems later.
